Visible Thinking in Mathematics involves creating a learning environment where every student can actively participate in problem-solving and mathematical discussions, making their ideas visible. To achieve this, the teacher must create a non-threatening environment where students can engage in authentic and engaging tasks with multiple entry points. This approach allows every student to enter the learning at their own level, encouraging them to make their thinking visible and problem-solve collaboratively whilst contributing to discussions.
The first step for the teacher is to develop an engaging task that includes enabling and extending prompts to support and challenge students. This workshop aims to help teachers trial rich tasks and learn how to develop their own tasks while making their thinking visible both as a teacher and a learner. By implementing this pedagogical approach, teachers can empower their students to become confident problem solvers and encourage them to participate in rich opportunities for mathematical learning.
